Patrick Brown receives RecoveryPeople’s 2023 Media Award of the Year

In recognition of his use of media to elevate his voice in media, of lived experience and substance use recovery, RecoveryPeople is excited to announce Patrick Brown as our 2023 Media Award of the Year recipient. This award is part of a RecoveryPeople campaign during National Recovery Month (September) that recognizes leaders in the recovery community.

A native of Midland, Texas, Patrick comes from a family that is known for their civic heart and generosity. He graduated Texas A&M with a Petroleum Engineering Degree in 1980 and had a 30 year career with Wagner & Brown and its subsidiary Pinnacle CNG. He worked recently as an Evaluation Engineer for Legacy Reserves for 5 years.

Patrick entered recovery in 1990 and struggled with continuous sobriety until June 12, 2005; he has been blessed with abstinence ever since. He has attended numerous treatment centers, a halfway house, and spent many hours in therapy to address issues of addiction and codependency. Patrick continues to be active in his recovery by frequently attending meetings, working steps with a sponsor and sponsees, Internal Family Systems therapy, and giving back to the recovery community. His lived experience shows itself as a valuable asset for working with others in experience, relatability and compassion.

Patrick shares his story of substance use and his recovery journey in the powerful documentary, Dancing with a Gorilla presented by Healthy Minds. He continues to share his lived experience and inspiring those who are struggling with addiction and those living in recovery.

Special recognition and thanks to Healthy Minds for producing the documentary, Basin PBS for making the documentary happen, and Josh Brown the cinematographer.
