Retreats and Events

2016

In collaboration with the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals and the Association of Substance Abuse Programs and with the support of Spread Hope Like Fire and the SAMHSA statewide network grant, we hosted an advocacy training at the Texas State Capitol.

January 2016

Through the support of a SAMHSA Recovery and Resiliency grant, RecoveryPeople, in conjunction with the Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health, hosted a Recovery and Resiliency Retreat for youth, and adults and families from both the mental health and the addiction recovery communities at Peaceable Kingdom, a wooded retreat center near Killeen, Texas. During the morning and early afternoon sessions, we focused on strategic planning and legislative updates. In the afternoons and evenings, we enjoyed the hiking trails, fellowshipped around camp fires. We enjoyed music throughout the weekend, since several participants brought their guitars and/or sang.

September 2015

Through a SAMHSA statewide network grant and as a part of National Recovery Month, RecoveryPeople held a two-day Recovery Capital Conference at the University of Texas' JJ Pickle Conference Center and School of Social Work. The event was designed, developed and delivered by the local Austin RecoveryPeople coalition, which call themselves the Recovery Oriented Community Collaborative (ROCC).

2017

In collaboration with the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals and the Association of Substance Abuse Programs and with the support of Spread Hope Like Fire and the SAMHSA statewide network, we hosted a Recovery Day at the Capitol. We educated participants around the legislative process, highlight bills that were relevant to addiction prevention, treatment and recovery and organized constants in groups to met with the respective Representatives.

February and April 2016

RecoveryPeople hosted two Recovery Residence Manager Retreats in 2016 as a part of a HRSA-support Recovery Residence Manger training program. Both retreats were held at MO Ranch in the Texas Hill Country. To reflect recovery residence settings and culture, participants were divided into groups of 8 to 10, which we called "houses". Each house had one or more peer leaders, who served as Camp Counselors. Camp Counselors facilitated the breakout sessions, which we called House Meetings.

The retreats were so popular, we attracted individuals from across Texas as well as Alaska, New York, Ohio, and Georgia.
