Recovery Support Peer Specialists (RSPS) is a peer specialist credential defined in the Texas Administrative Code and is administered by the Texas Certification Board (TCB).
Recovery Support Peer Specialists (RSPS) use their lived experience to support individuals with substance use and sometimes co-occurring disorders by individuals that include substance use disorders or substance misuse. They offer non-clinical services like recovery planning, resource connection, and advocacy with informed consent. Their work centers on empathy, peer connection, and shared recovery experiences. RSPS serve in diverse settings such as peer-run programs, treatment centers, hospitals, and correctional facilities. Certification ensures they meet training standards, agree to adhere to a code of ethics, and can qualify for Medicaid reimbursement through licensed providers. Though not licensed professionals, RSPS complete state-approved training and earn certification through the Texas Certification Board of Addiction Professionals (TCBAP) after completing all other requirements.
