2025 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner

Press Release: RecoveryPeople Honors Cynthia Humphrey with 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award

Celebrating Four Decades of Advocacy, Leadership, and Recovery

RecoveryPeople is honored to present Cynthia Humphrey with the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing her extraordinary legacy of service, advocacy, and leadership in the field of behavioral health and recovery.

With over 40 years of experience in health association management, Cynthia has been a driving force behind policy reform and grassroots advocacy at both the state and federal levels. As Executive Director of the Association of Substance Abuse Programs (ASAP) from 1994 until her recent retirement, she championed the expansion and quality of substance use disorder services across Texas.

For 16 legislative sessions, Cynthia educated policymakers on the importance of adopting a public health approach to addiction—shaping laws, funding, and systems that continue to impact thousands. Her influence extended nationally through her presidency of the State Associations for Addiction Services (SAAS) and her service on key planning committees, including the Texas Behavioral Health Advisory Committee.

A proud individual in long-term recovery, Cynthia’s participation in the 2001 St. Paul Recovery Summit marked her as a foundational voice in the modern recovery movement. Her work has always been rooted in compassion, equity, and the belief that recovery is a right—not a privilege.

Raised in suburban Washington, D.C., and a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work, Cynthia now resides in Kerrville, Texas with her husband and a lively menagerie of pets.

RecoveryPeople celebrates Cynthia Humphrey not only for her professional achievements, but for the heart, wisdom, and resilience she has brought to the recovery community for over four decades.
